Maru Ichi – Housing solution for Mekong Delta Area

Project Information:

Project Name: Maru Ichi – Low-cost flood-proof floating village model for Mekong Delta.

Authors: Architect Hồ Văn Anh Tuấn, Architect Tô Diệu Liên, Architect Nguyễn Phương Anh

Location: Mekong Delta

Maru Ichi is a sustainable community housing model for low-income people in flooded areas, and will be piloted in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. In addition to the ability of flood and storm withstanding, the houses in the Maru Ichi project will also be able to connect to each other to form a residence by an open corridor system. Then the floating village model has been developed under the criteria of “Green” and “Sustainable”, where residents can easily exchange goods as well as support each other when storms or floods come.

Architects of Maru Ichi have researched and proposed to use existing local materials such as nipa palm leaves to minimize costs. Each house will also be equipped with a solar panel and a water filtration system.

Each unit in Maru Ichi project has its own mechanism to filter river water for domestic use, while the sewage will be filtered before being discharged into the river. Therefore, each residential unit can be considered as a water purification mechanism, in order not to contaminate the Mekong River.
